Church Scripture Memorization: Let’s Memorize Titus Together

Nathan Klahsen   -

You may read that title and not be very excited,  but I’ll tell you a little secret: I didn’t use to be either.  I grew up in a church that encouraged it, but I just did it for the chocolate bars or the awards.  I’ve grown very different as I continue to grow in Christ.  Dallas Willard, who was a professor of Philosophy at the University of Southern California, said it so well when he said, “Bible memorization is absolutely fundamental to spiritual formation. If I had to choose between all the disciplines of the spiritual life, I would choose Bible memorization, because it is a fundamental way of filling our minds with what it needs. This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth. That’s where you need it! How does it get in your mouth? Memorization” (“Spiritual Formation in Christ for the Whole Life and Whole Person” in Vocatio, Vol. 12, no. 2, Spring, 2001, p. 7).

There are many good reasons to memorize scripture. To name a few would be to help us to be more like Jesus, help us have victory over sin and Satan, help us give counsel and comfort to people we love, speak the gospel to those who don’t know the gospel, and to know and enjoy God more.  We want to help you grow in this.  One of our members, Cata, put this together as we seek to memorize the book of Titus together.  We will be encouraging our Community Groups and Discipleship Groups to memorize this, but even if you aren’t in a group, we want to encourage you to join in.  Find a partner or a couple of people with whom you can walk together to memorize God’s Word.  Let us know what you think, and please download this booklet to give you practical steps in memorizing Titus as we do this together.

So let’s do this!  I’ll be doing it along with my Disciples Group.
